Nokia 808 PureView takes better pictures than Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5

We have already seen the Nokia 808 Pureview camera defeat the iPhone 4S and HTC One X, but now CNET has put the camera up against the a 10 megapixel point and shoot camera, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5, a camera which won a dpreview silver award.

They found both cameras had under one second shutter lag and they found both devices had reasonable colour accuracy, but the LX5 handles white balance more accurately.

The Nokia 808 Pureview was however clearly superior to the LX5 in terms of low-light performance, retaining much image detail and better noise performance at 5 megapixels (the shot above).

They concluded:

Overall, we think that the Nokia PureView is capable of replacing your regular compact camera, where image quality is concerned. The smartphone impressed us with its excellent low-light performance and image detail which we attribute it to its large 41-megapixel image sensor. However, don’t discount the LX5 yet as it provides manual controls and more accurate white balance. Shutterbugs who prefer the ergonomics and the speed of using a conventional camera’s physical button interface–in terms of dedicated buttons and custom settings–should still turn to a dedicated digital camera.

We can of course not wait for the Pureview camera to show up on Windows Phone.
