Windows Phone App Review: WeeMee
Need an avatar creator for your contacts? Take a look at the Windows Phone app WeeMee. WeeMee is another iPhone app that has found its way over to Windows Phone. WeeMee is a rather simple app that provides over 270 customizations to build a cartoon avatar. Once created you can share your avatar on Twitter, Facebook, or save it to your Windows Phone to use as a contact picture.
WeeMee is laid out simple with a Gallery Page that will display your created avatars (and some preloaded avatars) and a What's Hot page where you can find theme downloads as they become available.
You can create an avatar by pressing the "+" sign at the bottom of the Gallery page or from the three-dot menu on the What's Hot page. You choose the gender of the avatar and then use the category menu at the top of the screen to customize the appearance. You have the typical shirt, pants, face, body shape, hair, and shoes categories. You also have accessories and background choices as well. A color palette is just below your choices to fine tune the appearance. The selections are decent but I wish there was a body style that didn't look so frumpy.
When you're done, just hit the save button at the bottom of the screen and your avatar is saved within the WeeMee app.
To share or use the avatar, you'll need to go to the Gallery page, tap on the new avatar to pull it up full screen. From there, tap the three-dot menu to choose between sharing on Facebook or Twitter or saving the avatar to your phone. Once saved to your Windows Phone the avatar will be in your Saved Pictures album in the Pictures Hub where it can be used as a contact picture.
All in all, WeeMee isn't a bad app and gives you the option to add a little uniqueness to your Windows Phone. The downside is that there is no simple way to add the avatar to a contact. The Marketplace description states there is a built-in Address Book feature to make the avatars appear when friends call but that feature isn't present. An in-app feature that allows you to associate an avatar with a contact would be nice and save you some time.
Unfortunately there isn't a free trial for WeeMee to let you try things out before buying. The full version will run you $.99 and you can find WeeMee here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.
